Owens Releases New Information On Social Security Number Fraud

DENVER - Governor Bill Owens today released new information on the effects of Social Security number fraud in the state of Colorado. The numbers paint a startling picture of identity theft and employee verification fraud as symbiotic and mounting threats in the state.

"We have just celebrated Independence Day, but many Americans, and Coloradans, have lost part of their freedom - their identities have been stolen, " said Owens. "The crime of identify theft continues to grow, affecting more of our citizens every day."

Colorado Department of Labor and Employment executive director Rick Grice announced the Department's findings in two studies conducted over the past year. In the third quarter of 2005, the Department recorded 2,249 instances where employers reported a Social Security number that was used six or more times. One number in particular was provided by 50 different employers.

During the first quarter of 2006, the number grew larger still, with 368 Social Security numbers filed more than six times by 2,828 employers. One number was reported by 57 different employers.

"We believe that the integrity of the system and the security of innocent victims dictate that we cannot allow these abuses to go unchecked," commented Grice. "The CDLE is now taking the position that filing a report with us using erroneous Social Security numbers will be viewed as filing a false report."

In addition to stricter guidelines for employee verification, the Governor recently signed legislation that criminalizes identity theft in Colorado and also forms an Identity Theft Commission to find additional identity theft solutions. Social Security numbers are the "identifier of choice" for many identity thieves, as the numbers can be used to forge numerous other documents.

"It's vital that Colorado move to curb the misuse and theft of Social Security numbers," Owens concluded. "Employer verification and stronger laws against identity theft will work hand in hand to make sure Coloradans are protected."
